Ignacio Could Still Bring Increased Rainfall to Maui County

A High Surf Advisory is posted for Molokai and Maui through 6 p.m. Wednesday. Surf along east facing shores is expected to rise to 6 to 10 foot faces Monday. Expect strong breaking waves, shore break and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.
A High Surf Warning is posted for east facing shores of Maui through 6 p.m. Tuesday with wave heights rising to 12 to 20 foot faces in some spots. Expect ocean water occasionally sweeping across portions of beaches, very strong breaking waves and strong longshore and rip currents. Breaking waves may occasionally impact harbors making navigating the harbor channel difficult. Large breaking surf, significant shore break and dangerous currents will make entering the water very hazardous. Boaters should be aware of an increased number of surfers in the water.
A Small Craft Advisory is posted for Maui County windward waters as well as all channels through 6 p.m. Tuesday for rough seas of 8 to 13 feet. Inexperienced mariners should avoid navigating in these conditions.

Looking Ahead
Hurricane Ignacio is forecast to pass a couple of hundred miles to the northeast of the state Monday through Wednesday. Periods of breezy and wetter weather are expected, especially toward the middle of the week when winds turn southerly across the islands in the wake of Ignacio. Expect mainly moderate trades to continue on Monday, then winds will turn north, then west, and becoming southerly by Wednesday as Ignacio heads northwest. Moisture from the system will spread across the state, resulting in an increasing chance of rain for the area. Forecast models also show tropical moisture associated with Ignacio lingering in the island vicinity. With the available moisture, the chance for showers will remain elevated. In fact, locally heavy downpours are possible with convection developing in the afternoon and evening over the islands. Total rainfall amounts of 1 to 4 inches, with isolated amounts near 5 inches mainly in areas of higher terrain, are possible. Once Ignacio moves away from the islands, decreasing southerly winds are expected for the later part of the week.

Today we expect partly to mostly cloudy skies for windward and mauka areas with showers likely. Leeward spots are expected to be partly cloudy with isolated showers in the morning then scattered showers in the afternoon. High temperatures from 88° to 93°. Northeast winds from 15 to 20 mph are forecasted with higher gusts.

Partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected tonight with showers likely in windward and mauka spots. Scattered showers are expected for leeward areas. Low temperatures from 75° to 80°. Northeast winds are expected from 15 to 20 mph.
