Have Dinner, Learn about Maui’s Once-Majestic Leeward Forests

Vineyard Food Company, where Catering from Soup to Nuts will prepare a four-course fundraising dinner for Leeward Haleakalā Watershed Restoration Partnership on September 18, 2015.

A coalition focused on restoring and protecting Maui’s drylands forests is inviting you to dinner.

Leeward Haleakalā Watershed Restoration Partnership (LHWRP) will hold a dining event at 6 p.m. on Friday, September 18.  The company Catering from Soup to Nuts will prepare a four-course meal in its Vineyard Food Company venue, at 1951 E Vineyard Street in Wailuku.  Staff will be on hand to talk about LHWRPʻs conservation work and project sites.  Dinner costs $38 per person (tax and gratuity not included), in support of LHWRP.  Attendees can bring their own beer or wine, with no corkage fees.

Leeward Haleakalā Watershed Restoration Partnership is a coalition formed in June 2003 by 11 private and public landowners and supporting agencies.  The 43,175-acre partnership’s goal is to restore dryland forests on Haleakalā from Makawao through ‘Ulupalakua to Kaupō between 3,500 and 6,500 feet elevation.

Over the past 200 years, deforestation, overgrazing and invasive plants have reduced forest cover, which used to include 100-foot-tall trees, to less than 10% of its former greatness.  In addition to restoration and preservation, the group is also dedicated to research, education and outreach, in hopes that these unique parts of Maui will be protected for generations to come.
