Ka‘ahumanu Church Fundraiser Scheduled for Oct. 2

A fundraiser for restoration efforts for Ka‘ahumanu Church will be held on Oct. 2 from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Velma Santos Community Center in Kahului.

The Kōkua I Ka Hale Pule (Support the Church) event will be headlined by “2014 Female Vocalist of the Year” Hulu Lindsey.

Radio personality Alaka‘i Paleka, “the Morning Goddess,” will serve as emcee.

The fundraiser will feature dinner, entertainment, and live and silent auctions.

Lindsey’s Na Hōkū Hanohano trophy last year for “Female Vocalist of the Year”— her first Hōkū in a 55-year singing career—was awarded for her A He Leo Wale No E CD.

The entertainment lineup also includes ‘Ahumanu, featuring Liz “Kopa‘a Tita” Morales; Hawaiian Serenaders with Mele Fong and Richard Tom; Ka Pā Hula O Maui hālau led by Kumu Doll Aricayos; and the women of ‘Ahahui Ka‘ahumanu.

The Royal Order of Kamehameha will cater the alcohol-free event. The menu includes kalua pork, squid lū‘au, poke, lomi salmon, poi, rice, green salad, desserts and beverage.

“We are still accepting donations for the auctions,” said event co-chairwoman Carol Lee Kamekona, president of the 92-year-old Wailuku chapter of ‘Ahahui Ka‘ahumanu, which spearheads the event for the namesake church.

The stately Ka‘ahumanu Church at the top of Main Street in Wailuku began Aug. 19, 1832, with services under a thatched roof. Its grounds were part of the royal compound of Kahekili, 13th king of Maui. The steepled church was named for Hāna-born Queen Ka‘ahumanu at her request. She was Kamehameha the Great’s favorite wife; her influence helped establish Christianity in the Hawaiian archipelago.

Lindsey serves as Maui trustee for the state Office of Hawaiian Affairs and as a board member of ‘Ahahui Ka‘ahumanu, one of the Hawaiian societies sponsoring the event. Sponsors also include the Royal Order of Kamehameha I, Kahekili Chapter; ‘Ahahui Ka‘ahumanu, Wailuku and Hāna chapters, Hale O Na Ali‘i and OHA.
