Council to Consider Resolutions on Water, Smoking in Vehicles, Minimum Wage
The Maui County Council will take up resolutions on water infrastructure and domestic violence during its regular meeting scheduled to start at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2015 in the Council Chamber.
The meeting date was adjusted to accommodate travel for council members who are on official business, according to an earlier announcement issued by Council Chair Mike White.
The council normally meets on the first and third Fridays each of month.

At its meeting tomorrow, the Maui County Council will consider a resolution to acquire land in Central Maui for water infrastructure as recommended by the Water Resources Committee. The committee recommends adoption of a resolution approving the acquisition of 4.3 acres, and related easements, for expansion of the ʻĪao Water Treatment Facility and development of Wailuku Well 1.
“The improvements will replace the infamous Shaft 33 – an aging structure at retirement condition that has presented dangerous situations for our personnel. Replacement of the shaft will prevent disastrous loss of water, which officials have been concerned about for many years,” said Committee Chair Gladys Baisa in an earlier announcement.
The council will also consider a ceremonial resolution recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Also on the agenda is a bill for second and final reading that would grant a five-year conditional permit to He-Man Landscaping in Lahaina for the use of a baseyard within the county agricultural district for a property located at 4260 Hine Way in West Maui.

Bill 70 also surfaces for second and final reading. The bill for a ordinance would amend the Maui County Code relating to water meter issuance provisions for the Upcountry Water System. The Upcountry water meter list was created 16 years ago and includes more than 1,800 applicants.
Several items transmitted by Council Member Elle Cochran of West Maui also surface for review including resolutions to approve for inclusion in the 2016 Hawaiʻi State Association of Counties Legislative Package bills that: (1) prohibit smoking in motor vehicles occupied by minors; (2) increase the minimum wage to $15 per hour in 2019; and (3) allow persons with disabilities to indicate on their identification cards their disability.
Testimony will be accepted in the Council Chamber and at the council’s district offices in Hāna and Kaunakakai, Molokaʻi. The council’s Lānaʻi City district office will be closed for testimony, but residents may submit testimony by email to: [email protected] or fax to (808) 270-7171, according to Council Chair Mike White.
