Lahaina Woman Critically Injured in Honoapiʻilani Crash

A 32-year-old Lahaina woman was critically injured in an evening crash on the Honoapiʻilani Highway in Lahaina over the weekend, police said.

The incident was reported at 5:52 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2015, on the Honoapiʻilani Highway, just south of Pōhaku Aeko Street, near Mile 13.

According to police reports, the woman, who was operating a blue Toyota Corolla, “attempted to cross the southbound lane of the Honoapiʻilani Highway from the southbound shoulder, in order to head north.”

Police say the Corolla was broadsided by a silver Toyota 4-Runner that was traveling south.

As a result of the collision, police say the woman was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room with critical, life-threatening injuries.

The 28-year-old Kahului man that was driving the 4-Runner suffered minor injuries and was also transported to the emergency room for treatment, police said.

Police said the diver of the 4-Runner appeared to have been wearing his seatbelt, while the operator of the Corolla was not.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

UPDATE : 8:30 p.m. 10/25/15. Contra flow is being conducted along Honoapiʻilani Hwy. in the area of Ukumehame Park due to a motor vehicle accident.

ORIGINAL POST: 6:06 p.m. 10/25/15. Honoapiʻilani Hwy. area of Ukumehame Park (MP-12) is closed in both directions due to a motor vehicle accident.
