Seabury Hall Girls Run to Second-place Finish at State

As if hosting the state cross country championships at your school is not tough enough, the Seabury Hall girls suffered a rude awakening Saturday, and vowed to be stronger in the future.

The host school welcomed participants and teams from across the state to its tranquil campus in Olinda, where hundreds of spectators lined the soccer field, sat outside of Cooper House cheering as runners made their way down from the Upper School.

You can learn a lot about yourself and your team in three miles.

“We did really well today as a team,” said Seabury Hall head coach Bobby Grossman, moments after the girls’ race concluded under sunny skies and zero trade winds. “Our goal is to always try and do the best that we can, and to today we wanted to try and finish second overall. We could have come in here today and finished fourth (and still have won the state Division II team title), but the way we ran today we might have been second.”

The Spartans easily won their fourth straight Division II championship and remains the only school to do so since the HHSAA went to two divisions in 2012. Hawaii Prep Academy finished a distant second in D-II with 250 points (8th overall).

Grossman’s assessment of the race was accurate as Seabury Hall finished second to perennial state champion Punahou in the team standings. The Buffanblu ran away with their 10th crown in 11 years, finishing with 46 points compared to Seabury Hall’s 104. Iolani was third with 108, followed by Kamehameha Kapalama’s 164.

Reigning Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Amanda Beaman won the girls race in 18 minutes, 26.74 seconds. Seaman, who finished runner-up the previous two years, was 17 seconds ahead of Punahou’s Teresa Brady (18:43.9) and Noelani Obermeyer (18:45.3).

Maui Interscholastic League champion Ava Shipman of Seabury Hall was fourth in 18:59.7.

Kamehameha Kapalama’s Kaeo Kruse won the boys race in record-breaking fashion.

“She pushed it and made it a little bit exciting,” Grossman said of Shipman’s race. “She was going to try and stay with her (Beaman) the whole race and try to out kick her through the last downhill. The race is more mental than anything, we’re in shape, so you have to push through whatever is necessary sometimes. To be a winner, to be first place is not an easy thing to do.”

Holding back tears, Shipman recalled that critical moment in her race, near the end of the second mile.

“I was relaxed and stuff and right on Amanda’s tail where I was supposed to be and then she kind of tripped me, she bumped me. And I wasn’t really expecting it and I let it get to me and I shouldn’t have.

“It was a really good lesson and I’m actually glad it happened to me. It’s also kind of disappointing that she had to do that, but it’s ok because it’s part of being competitive and I totally understand.”

Grossman said Shipman “put it on the line and worked extremely hard this year.”

Teammate and junior classmate Veronica Winham broke from the pack early in the race led most of the first mile. She eventually finished 15th in 19:46.0. She was second to Shipman at the MIL championships a week ago.

“It was super cool to see her out there,” Shipman said said of Winham.

Grossman said he is especially proud of this team, and ranks them among the best he’s coached because of their positive attitude.

“All year, for whatever reason, this team has really stepped up. They have a great mental attitude, and hopefully that doesn’t change and we can continue to get better from it. We’re excited about next year and everybody returns. I mean we looked solid today.

“Next year, I guarantee Ava will be the favorite going into states. And she had a learning experience today, because nice doesn’t get it done sometimes.

“This was just an incredible day for the school. You see all the people here and you realize that this is such a great venue for an event like this and I hope we can host again in four years when it comes back to Maui.”
