Starting Tonight, The MACC Offers Weekend of Eclectic Entertainment

Beginning tonight, Thursday, Nov. 19, the Maui Arts & Cultural Center will offer a weekend filled with eclectic entertainment—a multidimensional theatrical performance, a Hawaiian cultural and historical event, and smooth jazz.

Dahlak Brathwaite will perform Spiritrials on Thursday, Nov. 19, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in The MACC’s Castle Theater.

Addiction, religion and the law intersect in a timely exploration of the criminal justice system.

Spiritrials, written and performed by Dahlak Brathwaite, chronicles the journey of Dahlak’s own criminalization along with his struggle to be vindicated and decriminalized in the eyes of the law and society.

Spiritrials is a multidimensional theatrical piece that blurs the lines between hip hop and dramatic performance.

This program contains strong language and mature themes.

Mai Poina: The Trial of a Queen

Mai Poina: The Trial of a Queen will be performed in The MACC’s McCoy Studio Theater on Saturday, Nov 21, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Victoria Kneubuhl’s courtroom drama reenacts Queen Lili‘uokalani’s trial for treason.

The play focuses on events in 1895 after Hawaiian nationalists failed to restore the queen to her throne, and she was tried by an American court for allegedly allowing the uprising against the new republic by her followers.

The play explores unresolved sovereignty issues triggered by the U.S. overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy. Discussion to follow.

Smooth Jazz All-Stars

The Smooth Jazz All-Stars will perform in the Castle Theater on
Sunday, Nov. 22, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The Smooth Jazz All-Stars features sax-man Paul Taylor, two-time Grammy Award-winning guitarist Paul Brown, Grammy-winning pianist Gregg Karukas and Hawai‘i’s own Michael Paulo.

In the 19 years since Taylor first got On the Horn with his hit debut album, he’s enjoyed an extraordinary journey in the contemporary urban jazz world. With 10 solo releases, he is back, and will be featuring new songs from his latest release, Tenacity.

Brown’s talents as producer/engineer have earned him two Grammy Awards and an impressive string of more than 60 No. 1 hits. In an illustrious career spanning over two decades, he has worked on projects for such influential artists as George Benson, Al Jarreau, Kirk Whalum, Patti Austin, Norman Brown, Luther Vandross, Boney James and more. He will be featuring tracks from his new release, Truth be Told.

Grammy Award-winning pianist/composer Karukas is a very familiar face to Hawai‘i audiences. His latest recording, Soul Secrets, has garnered back-to-back  No. 1 radio hit songs. With over 11 solo releases, Greg has had a string of No. 1 smooth jazz songs and is one of the most sought-after pianists in the genre.

Sax-man Paulo will be joining in for the fun.
