Weather Check Update: Maui Flood Advisory Cancelled

The flood advisory that was in effect for the island of Maui has since been cancelled.
The National Weather Service notes that while radar and rain gauges show that heavy rains have ended, the public should remain cautious and alert for any possible flooding conditions.
Motorists and pedestrians are reminded not to cross fast flowing or rising water in their vehicle or on foot.

The National Weather Service has extended a flood advisory for Maui until 12 p.m.
At 8:40 a.m., radar showed persistent moderate to heavy rain across the windward slopes of Haleakalā. The rain was nearly stationary with additional heavy showers continuing to move on shore over the next few hours. Forecasters with the NWS say the ongoing rain will keep teh threat for flooding and landslides up across the advisory area.
Earlier reports this morning noted large boulders on the roadway near Mile 15 on the Hāna Highway (360) in East Maui.
Motorists traveling through the area are advised to exercise caution and allow for extra time to reach their destination.
Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Haʻikū, Pukalani, Hāna, Makawao, Pāʻia, Paʻuwela and Nāhiku.

At 5:22 a.m., radar showed an area of heavy rain from Hoʻokipa Beach to Hāna in East Maui. The rain was nearly stationary with additional heavy showers continuing to move on shore. Forecasters with the NWS say radar estimated rainfall totals over the past six hours range from 3 to 5 inches in the area. Reports from the Maui Warning Point indicate there are large boulders on the roadway near Mile 15 on the Hāna Highway (360) in East Maui.
The NWS expects this general trend to persist over the next few hours, which will keep the threat for flooding and landslides up across the advisory area.

At 2:41 a.m., radar indicated an area of heavy rain from Hookipa to Hana. This area of rain was nearly stationary with additional heavy showers continuing to move on shore.
Radar estimated rainfall totals over the past six hours to range from 2 to 4 inches in the area.
Forecasters expect this general trend to persist over the next few hours, which will keep the threat for minor flooding up across the advisory area.
Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Haʻikū-Pauwela, Haʻikū, Pukalani, Hāliʻimaile, Makawao, Pāʻia, Paʻuwela and Nāhiku.

The National Weather Service has ISSUED a FLOOD ADVISORY for MAUI ISLAND in effect until 1:00 a.m.
A Flood Advisory means that nuisance flooding is occurring or imminent. A Flood Advisory may be upgraded to a Flash Flood Warning if flooding worsens and poses a threat to life and property.
This advisory may need to be extended if heavy rain persists.
EFFECTS: At 10:01 p.m. radar indicated an area of heavy rain from Hookipa to Hana. This area of rain was nearly stationary. Radar estimataed rainfall rates range from one to two inches an hour which will cause minor flooding in the advisory area.
Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Haiku-Pauwela, Haiku, Pukalani, Haliimaile, Makawao, Paia, Pauwela and Nahiku.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES: STAY AWAY FROM STREAMS, DRAINAGE DITCHES AND LOW LYING AREAS PRONE TO FLOODING. RAINFALL AND RUNOFF WILL ALSO CAUSE HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS DUE TO PONDING, REDUCED VISIBILITY AND POOR BREAKING ACTION. DO NOT CROSS FAST FLOWING OR RISING WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE OR ON FOOT. TURN AROUND…DON’T DROWN.
