Mayor Alan Arakawa answers some of the most-asked questions submitted to his office staff.

Mayor Arakawa:

Q: I’ve gone through the County of Maui’s Recycling, Refuse and Landfill Guide, but I can’t find anything about drop-off points for computer batteries. I also called a couple of centers, but they didn’t know anything. Computer batteries aren’t household batteries; neither are they auto or marine batteries. It looks like the e-cycling center might accept them, but they’re all the way over in Wailuku and are only open on Tuesdays and Saturdays for just a few hours.

A: Thank you for your diligence in researching where you can recycle your computer batteries. E-cycling is the only ongoing location that accepts computer batteries. I understand they are open Tuesdays from 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., which may be inconvenient for some; however, having the site open in this manner is fiscally efficient as it significantly reduces the tax dollars needed to run that program.

Please note that e-cycling accepts TVs and anything that attaches to them, computers and anything in them or that attaches to them, as well as microwaves. Malama Maui Nui also accepts computer batteries at their third Saturday event in West Maui, which took place recently.

If you are a Lahaina resident and want to save a trip, call Malama Maui Nui at 877-2524 to find out when the next West Side event will be held.
