Rescue crews assisted a man aboard a kayak after he lost his paddle in waters off of South Maui on Sunday, fire officials said.

According to department reports, crews responded to the call at 12:40 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015, in the ocean fronting the Kīhei Canoe Club.

Authorities say the 40-year-old local male was found drifting in the ocean about a quarter mile offshore.

Department officials say the man told authorities he was trying to paddle out to a sailboat moored offshore, using a small kayak, but required assistance when he lost his paddle.
