UPDATE 2: Truck Bursts Into Flames at Ho‘okipa

UPDATE 2: Jan. 14, 11:55 a.m.

According to Maui police, the truck fire started in the engine compartment and eventually engulfed the entire vehicle.

The adult male was seen removing his sovereignty plates prior to police arriving at the scene (see slideshow below).

The vehicle was unregistered and the individual was cited for numerous violations.

UPDATE: Jan. 12, 3:25 p.m.

Photographer Tad Craig shot these images of a pickup truck fire right next to Ho‘okipa this morning at approximately 7:30 a.m. while he was on his way to shoot windsurfing photos.

Craig said Maui police arrived shortly after the fire began, and that Maui Fire and rescue extinguished the flames within a minute of their arrival.
