Deadly Accident on Dairy Road Claims Life of Pedestrian

On Friday, Jan. 15, 2016 at approximately 9:24 p.m., a motor vehicle collision occurred at Dairy Road fronting the Maui Market Place and 115 feet south of Ohekani Street in Kahului.

Police say the collision occurred as a pickup truck, traveling north on Dairy Road, collided into a pedestrian crossing westbound on Dairy Road.

The pedestrian, a 41-year-old male with no local address, was not in a crosswalk at the time of the collision and was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical, life-threatening, condition where he later succumbed to his injuries, police said.

The pickup truck, described as a midsize vehicle, sustained front end damage and a broken headlight.  Police say the driver fled the area headed north on Dairy Road.

The name of the pedestrian is being withheld pending a positive identification and notification of the next of kin.

The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.

This was Maui County’s first traffic fatality for 2016, compared to no fatalities at the time last year.
