Two Heat Records Set in Kahului This Week

On January 27, 2016 we broke a record on Maui with a temperature of 86° recorded at 2:08 p.m. at the Kahului airport.

This breaks the old record of 85° last set in the years 1993 and 1959.

The new record is 5 degrees warmer than normal.

As other states break snowfall records, here on Maui we’ve tied a heat record.

On January 24, 2016 we tied a record in Kahului with a temperature of 88° at 1:40 p.m.

This ties the old record set in 1981 and is 7 degrees warmer than normal.

As a part of the Hawaii News Now weather team, Malika was nominated for two Emmy Awards for excellence in weather reporting and won the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Journalism Award for her reporting on Hawaii’s tsunami damage in 2011. In 2019, Malika was recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists Hawaii Chapter in the category of Science Reporting for her Big Island Now news report on what was happening beneath the sea surface at the ocean entry of the Puna lava flow.
