Tourism Authority Supporting 41 Maui County Programs in 2016

The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority announced today that 162 community programs and events statewide are receiving financial support in 2016, including 22 County Product Enrichment Program projects, 12 Natural Resources Community-Based Program projects, and 7 Living Hawaiian Culture Program projects in Maui County.
Altogether, HTA is providing $3.3 million in funding to support organizations in three areas essential to perpetuating Hawaiʻi’s sense of community, natural environment and native culture. The list includes the following projects based in Maui County:

Promoting Visitor and Community Connection to Traditional Hawaiian Crops

To support Maui Nui Botanical Garden’s program to grow and maintain Hawaiian crops (kalo, ‘uala, ko, ‘awa, mai‘a), distribute varieties to residents and community organizations, create educational materials for visiting school and community groups, and employ cultural practitioners to teach plant classes.
|
“Each community is vital at creating memorable experiences for our residents and visitors, and we are proud to support organizations that enrich and strengthen Hawaii through our programs,” said George D. Szigeti, president and CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Authority in an agency press release. “These funds help enhance communities-based projects and events, perpetuate the Hawaiian culture, and preserve Hawaiʻi’s pristine natural resources,” he said.
- Ninety-four of the projects are supported through the County Product Enrichment Program; 33 environment-based programs are receiving support through Natural Resources Community-Based Program in partnership with the Hawaii Community Foundation; and 35 cultural-based programs are receiving HTA support through the Kukulu Ola: Living Hawaiian Culture Program.
Through the County Product Enrichment Program, Hawaiʻi’s four counties receive HTA funding and other resources for tourism product development activities to support projects, festivals and events in the niche areas of cultural tourism, eco-tourism, agri-tourism, edu-tourism, health and wellness tourism, sports and techno-tourism in their respective counties.
The County Product Enrichment Program was created in 2002 as a partnership between HTA and the four counties to strengthen and diversify Hawaii’s tourism product and provide quality resident and visitor experiences.
HTA’s Natural Resources Program supports efforts that manage, improve and protect Hawaiʻi’s natural environment and areas utilized by residents and visitors through the Community-Based Natural Resources Program. The program was established in 2002 to respect, enhance and maintain Hawaii’s unique natural resources and environment.
HTA’s Kukulu Ola – Living Hawaiian Culture Program provides support to Hawaiian programs and cultural practitioners, craftsmen, musicians and other artists perpetuating the Hawaiian culture. The program was established to nurture a greater appreciation of the Hawaiian culture by creating visitor experiences, activities and programs that are respectful and accurate.
