Nothing prepares you for the cold of Upcountry Maui, certainly not the warmth of downtown in early March.

After competing in flawless conditions for three consecutive Fridays, Maui interscholastic League track and field athletes were subjected to the wrath of Mother Nature, Friday, at the Kamehameha Maui Relays at Kanaʻiaupuni Stadium in Pukalani.

Gusting winds of 20 to 25 mph and temperatures in the low 60s proved to be additional obstacles as the 2016 version of the Kamehameha Maui Relays will best be remembered as a survival mission of fierce weather conditions.

The rude welcome Mother Nature handed the MIL athletes figures to serve them well over the next four weeks as teams prepare for league championships across the state. In the MIL, for instance, three invitational scoring meets are slated for the Yamamoto Track & Field Facility, including two of which require trials the day before.

And a month from now, the one-day Honolulu Marathon Invitational, the state’s premier track meet that pits Oahu’s best with the best from the Neighbor Islands, is slated for Fri., April 7, on Oahu.

Friday’s freakish wind problem was compounded for sprinters and hurdlers who had the unenviable task of having to run head first into the gust.

As a result, the Baldwin boys chose not to run its horses — Bailey Kaopuiki, Laakea Kahoohanohano-Davis, Kiernan Leighton Mateo, and Jocel Aquino — and Seabury Hall limited sophomore sprinter Isaiah Payne to the 400 only.

There were similar jockeying in the girls division with Baldwin’s Kaitlin Smith running the 100, instead of the 110 hurdles and Kihei Charter’s Maya Reynolds ran the 100 over her specialties, the 200 and the 400.

“I like that we do it up here because the kids need to compete in different environments,” said Kamehameha Maui head coach Rudy Huber. “I think we get too complacent going down to War Memorial Stadium every week. By coming up here, our athletes have to deal with the wind, the environment is different, and it takes you out of your element a little bit.

“But that is what track is all about. As an athlete you have to adjust to our environment.”

Logan Keely was the Warriors’ lone individual winner in the girls high jump at 4 feet, 7 inches.

Smith won the long jump in 17 feet, 11 1/4 inches and the 100 in 13.96 seconds.

Seabury Hall had the most wins, with nine in the girls division. The Spartans were led by double-winners Ava Shipman, in the 1500 and 800, and Makena Dougherty in the shot put and 300 hurdles. The team also won the 4 x 400 relay and Distance Medley Relay.

Baldwin collected eight wins in the boys division, including the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays. Lahainaluna was next with four wins, including three individual winners in Matini Perlas-Kai in the boys discus, Kamal Golaube in the 300 hurdles, and Carver Locke in the triple jump.

King Kekaulike’s Shane Ribucan won the boys 100 and 200 — over 52 other sprinters entered.

When asked about the possibility of running the high hurdles and 100-meter dash with the wind at their backs in the future, Huber said: “If we had two systems that would be a possibility. We have a system, too, and once we are able to get it going we could have the two interact with each other and have two finish line.

“The kids need to know that there are going to be meets where you may have to run against the wind. So mentally you have to be prepared to handle that, and some kids can’t.”

Kamehameha Maui has just over 50 kids participating this year.

“A lot of sophomores and freshmen,” Huber added. “So this is kind of a rebuilding year for us, but I think we are going to do well in both the girls and the boys divisions. The kids are responding to all the coaches and it’s been fun to see them develop.”

Small schools like Kamehameha Maui have plenty of its top athletes competing in multiple sports. Huber said he welcomes athletes who crossover, however, they need to understand the difficulties they face.

“Because we have such a short season and we don’t get them out to really late — so that poses a problem to their training — and if you get a few little injuries here and there, and before you know it, the season is over.”

Huber would prefer an earlier start date for track. He said it would help to eliminate injuries, especially in technical events like the pole vault and hurdles, which require additional practice time.

“It’s good to finally have all the kids out and they are excited to be here, so I think this year is going to be a good one for us.”
