UPDATE:  Fire crews responded to a reported brush fire in the Wailua area of East Maui at around 9:28 a.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2016. Firefighters were on scene at 10:04 a.m. and found a 50 x 100 foot brush fire burning next to the Hāna Highway, between mile markers 20 and 21. Maui Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto said “The fire had creeped up a steep embankment on the mauka side of the road which made it difficult to access and extinguish.” The department’s Air 1 helicopter was called in to assist crews with water drops and the fire was called extinguished at 11:40 a.m. The cause was undetermined and there were no damages or injuries reported.  A Hāna engine and water tanker were dispatched to the scene.
