Track and field athletes from the Maui Interscholastic League took advantage of windy conditions Friday, posting some of the year’s fastest times in the sprints and relays.

And why not, with the league championships next week, better late than never.

A strong tailwind helped many of the MIL’s top sprinters produce their best 100- and 200-meter times, which will serve them well three weeks from now at the state championship seeding meeting on Oahu. Friday was also the final dress rehearsal for MIL varsity athletes looking at ways to contribute to the team scoring next week or hoping to gain a boost of confidence in their particular specialty event.

The MIL track and field championship trials is Friday, April 22. The finals is Saturday, April 23. The boys discus kicks off the field events on both days, beginning at 4 p.m. Running events get underway at 5 p.m.

The biggest winners at MIL Meet #4 came early, in the first two running events of the night, the high hurdles and the 100 meters. Ironically, league officials were experiencing electronic glitches with their Fully Automatic Timing (FAT) system during those events and were forced to delay the start of two heats.

According to head referee Allan Fernandez, who doubles as the MIL Track and Field Association President, the first two running events of the meet — girls and boys high hurdles — were not official FAT marks.

Fernandez said re-running the events in question was not an option, “because it was just a practice meet.”

Baldwin High School’s Kaitlin Smith won the girls 100 high hurdles and remains undefeated in MIL competition for more than two years. Her time of 14.09 seconds automatically raised a red flag as her season’s best is 15.16, which ranks her No. 2 in the state.

The state record in the event is a hand-timed 14.8 by former Baldwin standout Prestine Foster, who transferred to Hilo when she established the mark her sophomore season in 1993. The wind-aided record in the 100 hurdles is 14.64 by Iolani’s Erin Stovall.

Smith’s time is the only questionable mark from the girls varsity heat. However, the next four place finishers PR’d, starting with runner-up Kacy-Lyn Navarro (15.36) and Kaeana Anguay (16.34) of Baldwin, and Seabury Hall’s Makena Dougherty (16.54).

Of the 23 varsity runners competing in the 100 for at least the second time, 22 of them ran a personal-best time, including 11 in the girls division.

Kamehameha Maui’s Ani Nitta won her heat by breaking the 13-second barrier. She clocked a best of 12.86, followed by King Kekaulike’s Amira Kern in 13.03 and Seabury Hall’s Claire Borthwick in 13.04.

Nitta combined speed and strength to also win the 200 later in the meet. She ran a best of 26.02, being pushed by Borthwick (26.22) and Maya Reynolds (26.30) down the stretch.

On the boys side, Baldwin’s Bailey Kaopuiki ran a season’s best 10.82 and teammate Jocel Aquino was second in 11.39. Kaopuiki also anchored the Bears’ 4×100 relay, breaking the 44-second barrier for the first time this year in MIL competition.

The Bears’ 400 relay team of Kaopuiki, Aquino, La’akea Kahoohanohano-Davis and Sean Fukuhara blazed a new state best time of 43:23

Other top varsity performances from Friday included:

* Lahainaluna hurdler Kamal Golaube won both hurdle races in the boys division, minus Baldwin hurdlers La’akea Kahoohanohano Davis and Kiernan Leighton Mateo. Golaube was timed in 14.95 and 40.75 running in front from start to finish.

* Maui High hurdler Edilito Ranchez finished a strong second to Golaube in the 110s and 300s. Ranchez made huge improvements, going from 16.88 in the highs to 15.83 and from 46.48 in the intermediates to 44.09.

* Seabury Hall’s Cole Christie and Kihei Charter’s Justice Crozier took turns crossing the finish line first. Crozier won the 400 in 52.73, followed by Christie’s 53.24. But it was Christie winning the 200 in 23.38, followed by Crozier in 23.50.

* Seabury Hall’s Isaiah Payne was ill all last week and did not attend the meet. Payne is the MIL’s top quarter-miler and ranks No. 2 in the 100 and 200, behind Bailey.

* King Kekaulike’s Alexis Henderson was a double winner in the girls ring events, staying just ahead of Molokai’s Sehja Pedro in the discus, 94-03 to 91-07, and Kori Derouin in the shot put, 33-0 2 to 32-4.

* Kamehameha Maui’s Micah Au-Haupu added more than 4 feet to his best throw in the shot put, winning the event with an MIL and personal best of 47-2. The next three throwers all PR’d in the shot. Au-Haupu was runner-up in the discus at 136-0, behind Baldwin’s Andre Vaivela, who raised his season’s best mark in the discus from 145-02 to 154-02.

* Seabury Hall’s Ava Shipman doubled in the girls 800 and 3000. The Spartan won the shorter race in 2:25.11 and the longer one in 10:41.98. Shipman ran the 100 instead of the 1500 and finished 8th in 13.92, better than six other varsity sprinters. She later anchored the Seabury Hall 4×400 relay to a season’s best 4:16.96. Joining her were teammates Erika Preseault, Maile Dougherty, and Borthwick.

* Baldwin’s Sean Fukuhara won the pole vault in 14 feet, after making three unsuccessful attempts at 14-8. Teammate Kai Sears PR’d in the 1500, winning the event in 4:28.84.

  • * Baldwin’s La’akea Kahoohanohano-Davis won the high jump at 6-4 and ran the second leg on the 4×100 relay team. Mateo has returned to practice after a leg injury caused him to miss the last three meets. He is slowly working his way back, and will see limited hurdle duty from now until the state championships.
