Crews today successfully removed a large honey bee colony that was found within a State Civil Defense emergency siren lock box near Haycraft Beach Park in Māʻalaea.

A county parks maintenance worker discovered the bees about a week and a half ago when he went to paint over some graffiti on the wooden box where the civil defense siren is located.

The worker then contacted Maui County Civil Defense which in turn contacted State Civil Defense agency, according to Maui County communications director Rod Antone. State Civil defense paid for the beekeeper to remove the hive.

“All told there were an estimated 60,000 to 70,000 bees in the hive and about 60 pounds of honey,” said Antone. “The beekeeper estimates that the bees were there for about two years considering the size of the comb.”

As part of the removal process the beekeeper blew smoke into the box to confuse the bees, then he removed the wooden panels and vacuumed some of the bees up to make it easier to remove the honeycomb. Then he vacuumed the rest of the bees up once the comb was out.

County officials say the bees will be relocated to the beekeeper’s farm.
