Effective July 1, 2016, a sewer rate increase averaging 5% will go into effect in Maui County for general and agricultural customers.

Water department officials say the hike is necessary to keep the wastewater utility self-supporting without a general fund subsidy from the County of Maui.

Single family residential customers will see  a maximum increase of $2.65 per month.  Sewer fees fund the operations, maintenance and replacement of the wastewater infrastructure.  The last rate increase was on July 1, 2015.

Water System Development Fees for 5/8-inch meters will also increase from $6,030 to $12,060, also effective on July 1, 2016.

The increase is intended to recover a higher portion of the costs of supplying water and recover some of the costs of developing additional resources.
