Happy Valley Brush Fire Started by Fireworks

Maui firefighters responded to a brush fire reported at Mokuhau Park in Happy Valley at 6:24 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6, 2016.

A Kahului engine crew arrived 11 minutes later at found a 20-by-20-foot fire in the grass and brush between the Mokuhau Park basketball court and ʻĪao Stream.

A group of juveniles were seen playing with fireworks nearby just before flames were seen.

One of the juveniles called 911 dispatchers to report that one of them accidentally started the fire after throwing fireworks in the brush.

A 12-year-old girl who lives in the neighborhood was reported to be the one that threw the firework.

The fire was called extinguished at 7 p.m.

The Wailuku crew was called out to a hot spot at the Mā‘alaea brush fire and was unavailable.
