NOW OPEN: Landslide 20-Feet High Forces Closure of Hāna Hwy in Wailua

Update: 7:50 p.m. 7.17.16

The Hāna Highway (360) is now OPEN in both directions as of 7:50 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, 2016.  The road was closed for 12 hours while state crews worked to clear the roadway of debris from a landslide reported in Wailua near Mile 19 at around 7:45 a.m. Motorists are reminded to drive with caution as roads remain slick from recent rains.

The Hāna Highway (360) remains closed in both directions in the Wailua area of East Maui near Mile 19.

Police say it may be open later tonight if state crews are able to clear debris by then.

We are awaiting an update from police on the progress of debris removal.

Maui Police Lt. Gregg Okamoto tells Maui Now that the landslide is about 20 feet high and spans the width of the road.

Showers continue to affect the windward areas, making roads slick.

The Hāna Highway (360) remains closed in both directions in the Wailua area of East Maui near Mile 19.

Maui Police Lt. Gregg Okamoto tells Maui Now that the landslide is about 20 feet high and spans the width of the road.

He said the estimated time to clear the road is tonight.

Motorists are advised to use an alternate route.

The Hāna Highway (360) is temporarily closed due to a landslide in the Wailua area of East Maui near Mile 19.

Police issued a road closure notification at around 7:44 a.m. on Sunday, July 17, 2016, saying the highway is closed in both directions.

Crews from the state Highway’s Division are currently on scene attempting to clear the roadway of debris.

There is no estimated time on when the road will be reopened.
