Visiting Bicyclist Run Over in Makawao Accident

Bicycle accident, Makawao.

A 63-year old male bicyclist was struck by an oncoming vehicle after he failed to negotiate a bend on Makawao Avenue on Monday morning, Sept. 26, 2016.

Maui police say the bicyclist, who was visiting from Omaha, Nebraska, was traveling north on Makawao Avenue near Kee Road, when he lost control of the bicycle he was riding.

Police say he fell on the ground and slid into the opposing lane of travel, where he was run over by a blue 1998 Dodge Ram truck being operated by a 58-year old man.

The incident was reported at 9:54 a.m.

Police say the bicyclist was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The operator of the truck was not injured.

The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol are under investigation.
