Reggae Superstars Sly & Robbie with Marty Dread, Oct. 1

GRAMMY Award-winning Reggae Superstars Sly & Robbie will perform on Maui in a new Music Icon Series with special guest, Maui favorite Marty Dread.

“A Tribute to Legends of Reggae” is for one-night only and starts at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016 at Maui Theatre in Lahaina.

The event also celebrates the release of Marty Dread’s brand new CD, Marty Dread – Icon Series Volume 1. The CD will only be available at Maui Theatre and the first 50 people who purchase tickets to the concert will receive an autographed copy of Marty Dread’s exclusive new release.

Tickets start at $40 for General Admission. Limited VIP Packages are available for $80 and include an exclusive meet-and- greet with Sly & Robbie and Marty Dread, a copy of Marty Dread – Icon Series Volume 1, seating in the first two rows of the theatre, and access to the VIP lounge area and VIP concession.

Sly Dunbar (drums) and Robbie Shakespeare (bass), are Jamaica’s most prolific rhythm section and production duo, and are widely recognized as “the world’s greatest rhythm section. Affectionately called the “Riddim Twins,” the pair are said to be responsible for designing the modern sound of Jamaican music. They have been making music together for over 35 years and have played on or produced over 200,000 recordings.

The iconic duo has produced and performed with the highly regarded musicians around the world including every reggae artist from Beenie Man, Sean Paul and Shaggy to Peter Tosh, Don Carlos, and Gregory Isaacs and mainstream music legends like Ben Harper, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Carlos Santana, Sinéad O’Connor, Britney Spears, Alicia Keys, UB40’s Ali Campbell, No Doubt, the Fugees and countless others.

Their work as arrangers, producers, songwriters, and session musicians has earned them multiple awards and nominations. In 1984, the first year Reggae got its own Grammy category, they won with Black Uhuru. They won another Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 1998 with Friends and several others. They have also been nominated with No Doubt, for whom they produced two hit singles in 2001 (Hey Baby and Underneath it all).

Maui’s own Marty Dread has performed across the US and in Brazil, Tahiti, Canada, Thailand, Guam, Saipan and China – including at the White House in Washington, D.C., Moscow’s Red Square in Russia, and the Cotton Club in Harlem.

He has also played major festivals including Reggae on the River, Farm Aid, Reggae on the Rocks, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, and more in the Caribbean, including Barbados and reggae’s homeland, Jamaica.

Marty Dread has also toured as an opening act for Willie Nelson and appeared on stage with Willie Nelson at his annual Farm Aid concerts in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Kansas City, Missouri and his 4th of July Picnic in Fort Worth, Texas.

In the recording studio, Marty Dread has worked with Willie Nelson, Inner Circle, Kris Kristofferson, Anthony B, Michael McDonald, Junior Reid, Mikey Dread, Fiji, Irie Love, Pato Banton, Sly & Robbie, Mad Professor, Tippa Irie, Toots Hibbert, Oshen, Common Sense, Bluetech and others.

He has produced 16 CD’s in 20 years and his newest, Marty Dread – Icon Series Volume 1 is a tribute to the great songwriters of multiple genres spanning several generations. The album features top billboard Pop, Rock and Country hits, all done in the island Reggae style unique to Marty Dread.

Volume 1 includes renditions of songs by Stephen Stills, Tim McGraw, Michael Buble, Harry Chapin, Credence Clearwater Revival and many more. Also included on this disc is a version of Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” as a duet with Marty Dread and Darren Lee of “Burn’n Love” fame.  CD’s will be sold exclusively at Maui Theatre and will be released on its label, Kattwood Records.
