Nishikawa Architects, Inc. in Wailuku, Maui, was awarded the prestigious “Grand Award” for their Wailuku residence during the 31st Annual BIA Renaissance Building and Remodeling Gala held on Oʻahu on Oct. 5, 2016.
The Maui-based design-build firm, Architectural Design and Construction, Inc. also received an “Award of Merit” for their Wailea residence. Nishikawa Architects, Inc. was also the architect for the project.
Both awards were for the “new residential projects” category for homes priced at more than $999,001.
Building Industry Association of Hawaiʻi’s annual award recognizes the diversity and excellence in quality construction and design of new and remodeled projects.
The Wailuku residence, referred to as “Lona Ridge,” is located on six acres atop Wailuku Heights, 1,200-feet above sea level.
“Our concept was to create a design with Hawaiʻi’s unique historic character – to give the feeling the home had been there for generations,” said Project Architect Morgan Gerdel of Nishikawa Architects, Inc. “In the 1920s and 30s Hawaiʻi architect C.W. Dickey designed a number of homes incorporating the California Mission revival style, his work was our inspiration for this project.”
The Wailea residence is situated at the top of a crest that overlooks an adjacent golf course that provides open view planes. “Utilizing a curved design to make a modern architectural statement, three large curved sliding doors pocket into the adjacent curved walls enhance the view while creating a seamless flow to the pool deck area,” company representatives said.
The curved lānai roof above has large eight-foot overhangs that cantilevers out to provide protection and eliminate the need for columns. “The design incorporates feng shui concepts throughout and maintains a clean contemporary Hawaiian feel that caters to the outdoor living lifestyle,” representatives said.
Chartered in 1955, the Building Industry Association of Hawaiʻi is a professional trade organization affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders, representing the building industry and its associates.
The 500 members of BIA-Hawaiʻi are developers, contractors, suppliers, Realtors, architects, financial institutions and a host of other professionals who serve the building industry.
