Donald Gilbert Nitsche
January 20, 1930 – October 28, 2016

Donald Gilbert Nitsche, 86, of Ocean View, Hawaiʻi, was born in Seattle, Washington on Jan. 20, 1930, and passed away on Oct. 28, 2016 at home. Donald served our Country in the US Navy, “Seabees”, and was a Korean War Vet. He served his community in Ocean View in many ways including obtaining a water well.

He is survived by spouse Martha; son Karl (Anafel) Nitsche of Napil, Maui; daughter Jahna Brown of Ocean View; sister Lynn Layton of Seattle, Washington, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Military Honors are scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2016 at 12 p.m. at West Hawaiʻi Veteran’s Cemetery. Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016 at 3 p.m. at Kahili Blvd., Ocean View, Hawaiʻi.

In 2001, as the head coach of Baldwin H.S., Ryan led the girls softball team to its first state championship title and went on to assist the team to win its second state title in 2007. Ryan Souza established the Pacific Pride Club team to help prepare young local talent to compete at the college level. In 2008, Ryan Souza became a State Farm Insurance agent and opened his office in Makawao. Ryan Souza also enjoyed, trained and competed in Jiu-jitsu.

Ryan Souza is survived by his parents, Rudy and Christine Souza; wife, Liza Ann; sons, Ronin, Rigan; daughter, Rylee and brother, Alfred Souza.  A celebration of Ryan’s life will be held Nov. 11, 2016 at Ballard Family Mortuary in Kahului at 6 p.m. The family requests casual attire and no flowers please.

April 9, 1932 – October 27, 2016

Barbara Jane Stiller, 84, of Kailua Kona, Hawaiʻi, was born in Clinton, Iowa on April 9, 1932, and passed away on Oct. 27, 2016 in Kealakekua, Hawaiʻi. Barbara was realtor, homemaker and substitute teacher. She also served as President of the Kailua-Kona Seniors, attended the Kona Seventh-Day Adventist Church, and was a member of Young Republicans in her youth.

She is survived by spouse Frank of Kailua-Kona; daughters Stacey Stiller; Barrie Stiller and Maile Stiller, all residing Haʻikū, Hawaiʻi; brother Richard Fenley of California; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial services are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 4, 2016 at 10 a.m. at the Kona Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

February 10, 1933 – October 26, 2016

Smiley Kaualo Kaiwi, 83, of Kula, passed away on Oct. 26, 2016 at Maui Memorial Medical Center. She was born on Feb. 10, 1933 in Waiheʻe, Maui.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016, at Kings Cathedral in Kahului, service will begin at 10:30 a.m., and burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Maui Memorial Park in Wailuku.
Family requests Aloha attire.

Smiley retired from the State of Hawaiʻi, Department of Education. She worked as a cook and baker for Pāʻia Elementary School, and Baldwin High School. She was also a Seamstress.

She is survived by her children, Charmaine (Carl) Washington, Lorna Mae (Denis-deceased) Nishihara, Rhoda-Ann (Jon) Shimabuku, Samuel J. Kaiwi Jr., and Wendy Curtis Kaiwi; 10 grandchildren, Kealii, Hokulani, Kenika, Rhojon, Wendy, Uilani, Amy, Iwani, Curtis, and Briana; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Robert Hoffman
November 16, 1930 – October 25, 2016

Robert A. Hoffman, 85, of Hawaiian Paradise Park, Hawaiʻi died Oct. 25 at Pōhai Mālama. Born in Terra Haute, Indiana. He served in the National Guard, US Air Force and Marine Corps Reserve veteran, retired VP Boise Cascade real estate division, former co-owner and general manager Hilo Naniloa Resort, former commercial pilot and flight instructor, Past Master Kilauea Masonic Lodge, 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner.

Survived by wife of 64 years Shirley Hoffman, son Edward, daughter Roberta (Donovan) Cho, pre-deceased by daughter Lynn, seven grandsons and ten great-grandchildren.

Services to be held Nov. 13 at the Hilo Masonic Temple (335 Wailuku Dr. Hilo, HI 96720) Visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Service at 1 p.m. Refreshment to follow.

February 13, 1958 – October 16, 2016

Eva Margot Herter, 58 of Kīhei, passed away on Oct. 16, 2016 at her home in Kīhei. She was born in Ulm on the Danube in Germany as the youngest of three siblings. She came to Hawaiʻi 1994 and worked at various companies as a travel adviser covering all Hawaiian Islands.

The Herter Family would like to extend their gratitude to all her friends, co-workers, Doctors and all the staff at the Maui Memorial Hospital and the staff of Halemakua.

She is survived by Isolde Herter, sister and family and Wolfgang Herter, brother and family. Scattering of ashes on Maui to be held Dec. 3, 2016 at 7:45 a.m. by the Manaʻolana Pink Paddlers, located with the Maui Canoe Club just north of Sugar Beach condominium (300 N. Kīhei Rd.). Watch for the pink and red, white and blue canoes. A hui hou kākou (until we meet again), Aloha.
