Hawaiʻi, Maui Celebrate 10 Years of Great American Smokeout
The Hawaiʻi Department of Health, tobacco prevention advocates, and policymakers from across the state celebrate the 10-year anniversary today of Hawaiʻi’s landmark 2006 Clean Indoor Air Act.
The measure expanded smoke-free prohibitions in enclosed and partially enclosed areas statewide.
The event will also highlight Hawaii’s successes over the last decade, and unveil a new strategic plan for addressing current tobacco use in Hawaiʻi.
The celebration also commemorates the 41st annual Great American Smokeout, a national event that encourages smokers to make a plan to quit or to plan in advance and quit smoking on that day.
Here on Maui, students will be celebrating the event from noon to 5 p.m. on the Great Lawn of the Kahului campus with educational materials, entertainment and sign-waving in support of a Smoke-Free initiative to be voted on Friday at the University’s Academic Senate meeting.
