ILWU Petition Helps Maui Bulk Sugar Workers
The US Department of Labor approved of a petition filed by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union seeking adjustment assistance for bulk sugar workers who were affected by the closure of Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar Company on Maui.
US Senator Brian Schatz responded to the news saying that truckers that hauled bulk sugar were directly and severely impacted by the closure.
He said he’s glad the Labor Department approved of the petition for assistance and said it will provide some relief.
Federal funding will help displaced workers make ends meet and provide opportunities for them to gain new skills and find new jobs.
