Landslide/Downed Trees on Hāna Hwy: OPEN as of 4:40 a.m.

The Hāna Hwy (360) is now OPEN on the Pāʻia side of Puaʻa Kaʻa State Park near mile 22.5 where crews worked overnight to clear a landslide.

2/28/17 @ 08:27 p.m.

Hāna Hwy (360) is closed to traffic at mile-marker 9 due to a downed tree across the Hāna-bound lane and mile-marker 22.5 near Puaʻa Kaʻa State Park due to a landslide across both lanes of travel. There is also a downed tree on the roadway on the Hāna-side of the park. State Highways is responding to clear the roadway. Motorists should expect extended delays and avoid the area until the weather subsides.  There is no ETA on completion.

2/28/17 @ 8:45 p.m. There is a tree down, blocking the Hāna Bound lane of the Hāna Hwy at Mile 9.5. Emergency crews are in route.

UPDATE: FLASH FLOOD WARNING – ISLAND OF MAUI EXTENDED TO MIDNIGHT 

EVENT:  The National Weather Service has EXTENDED the FLASH FLOOD WARNING for the ISLAND OF MAUI in effect until 12:00 a.m.

A Flash Flood Warning means that flooding is occurring or will develop quickly.

This warning may be extended if flash flooding persists.

A Flash Flood Watch is also in effect for Maui County through Wednesday afternoon.

EFFECTS:  At 9:57 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over east Maui has abated.  However, a couple of rock slides has affected the flow of traffic along Hana Highway between Kipahulu and Keanae.  The stream level at Oheo Gulch is trending down but is still elevated.  Due to these conditions, the flash flood warning is extended through midnight.

Locations in this warning include but are not limited to: Haiku-Pauwela, Hana, Huelo, Nahiku, Kipahulu, Kaupo, Kula, Haleakala National Park, Kailua and Wailua.

Flash Flood Warning until 10:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flash Flood Warning for the island of Maui until 10:30 p.m. HST.

At 7:22 p.m. HST, radar indicated heavy rain between Haʻikū and Nuʻu. Rain was falling at a rate up to 3 to 4 inches an hour. Flash flooding is expected to begin shortly.

Locations in the warning include but are not limited to: Haʻikū-Paʻiuwela, Hāna, Kīpahulu, Huelo, Nāhiku, Kaupō, Kula, Haleakalā National Park, Kailua and Wailua.
