A state-of-the-art sports and events stadium was built at Lahainaluna High in West Maui and is named in honor of its primary benefactor, Sue D. Cooley.  New construction funding secured by the legislature is for the renovation of other areas of the campus including restrooms, showers, selective demolition, masonry work, carpentry, plumbing and electrical work. State Representative Angus McKelvey (D-10, West Maui, Māʻaleaea, and North Kīhei) announced the award of a construction contract to Castaway Construction and Restoration, LLC, as part of a larger project of upgrades and repairs at Lahainaluna High School.

Rep. McKelvey, along with Senator Rosalyn Baker and the Maui delegation, were able to secure funds for the necessary construction work.

“With the contract now in place, work is expected to commence in May with an expected completion date of August, 2017,” McKelvey said. “Because students will need to use the facilities as instruction resumes in the fall, August is a hard date of completion for essential facilities. Other portions of the larger project will continue during the school year.”

McKelvey said the contract involves renovating restrooms and showers, selective demolition, masonry work and carpentry, as well as plumbing and electrical work.

“This project will provide Lahainaluna High School with necessary repairs and renovations our students and community deserve,” McKelvey said. “Education is an investment in our future, and keeping our school facilities up to date is part of that investment. Now that the funds and contracts are in place, the upgrades and necessary construction work is ready to commence.”

The Department of Education awarded the $575,000 contract on Feb. 28, 2017. Additional details regarding scheduling and access during construction will be addressed at an upcoming pre-construction conference with Lahainaluna High School’s temporary principal, Daniel Espaniola, and representatives from DOE and Castaway Construction.

“Providing our schools with state of the art facilities is no longer simply prudent, it is a necessity. The construction work at Lahainaluna High School reinforces our commitment to the success of future generations,” said McKelvey.
