Lānaʻi Fire Crew Assists Motorist Down Muddy Munro Trail
Firefighters assisted three individuals off of the Munro Trail, on the Lānaʻihale mountaintop on the island of Lānaʻi at 1:33 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7, 2017.
Firefighters responded after the female driver called for help, saying it was raining heavily and the dirt road was very muddy. Firefighters used a 4-wheel-drive vehicle to navigate up the Munro Trail and reached the two females and one male near the summit at 2:34 p.m.
A firefighter drove the rented Jeep and the three visitors down the mountain, reaching a paved road near Keomoku Highway at 3:15 p.m.
Maui Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto said the female driver became exhausted after driving the Jeep on the muddy trail.
The Jeep had been difficult to drive since it was not engaged in 4-wheel-drive mode and did not have power steering.
