An explosive device was detonated in Mākena on Maui Monday afternoon by members of the Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.

The Navy team along with personnel from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement arrived on scene at around 3:15 p.m. on Monday, March 20, 2017.

DLNR officials tell Maui Now that the object was deemed old and very deteriorated, and identified the ordnance as possibly a 1940s WWII mortar round.

DLNR spokesperson Deborah Ward said it was detonated using a very small charge at approximately 3:45 p.m. and personnel left the scene at 4 p.m.

No damage was reported and no one was injured in the incident.
