Brush Fire Scorches Two Acres in Haʻikū

A fire burned two acres of brush and grass in Haʻikū before being brought under control on Saturday afternoon.

The incident was first reported at 4:05 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2017, by area residents who noticed smoke coming from an area near the Valley Isle Memorial Park.

Pāʻia firefighters were on scene at 4:15 p.m. and found a large area of grass and brush on fire on Hahana Road, which leads down to the famed big wave surf break at Peʻahi, also referred to as “Jaws.”

Maui Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto said the fire was about a half-mile makai of the Hāna Highway, and was brought under control at 4:35 p.m. and extinguished at 5:35 p.m. There were no injuries reported, and no structures were threatened.

The cause of the brush fire was undetermined.

An engine crew from Makawao and water tanker from Kahului also assisted with fire fighting efforts.
