A visiting man from San Francisco California was rescued from the Ohai Loop Trail near Nākālele Point off of the Kahekili Highway on Friday afternoon, following reports that he was experiencing a medical emergency.

The incident was reported at 2:33 p.m. on Friday, April 21, 2017.

Firefighters and paramedics from Nāpili arrived at the trailhead at around 3 p.m. and hiked down the trail on the makai side of Kahekili highway to reach the man. The hiker, a 29-year-old man, was found about 300 yards into the trail.

Fire officials say the man had been hiking on the trail with a family member when he began experiencing problems with a medical condition, which prevented him from continuing and he was unable to walk out on his own.

Firefighters carried the man out to the highway in a stretcher basket and transferred him to an ambulance. EMS personnel then drove the man a short distance to a nearby landing zone, where he was loaded onto a helicopter medevac and flown to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
