J. Walter Cameron Center Awarded $1.1 Million Grant

The J. Walter Cameron Center received a $1.1 million dollar grant that will provide funding for ongoing infrastructure improvements from the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation.

The funding will allow the Cameron Center to complete the third phase of a six-year comprehensive rehabilitation effort aimed at ensuring the center’s long-term viability as a one-stop community services facility.

“We are thrilled to receive such incredible support from the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation. The Cameron Center was built in the 1970s and we now must make crucial and costly repairs to continue serving Maui’s non-profit community and the people of Maui for years to come,” said Executive Director Cesar Gaxiola

To date, earlier phases of the project have accomplished over $3 million in substantial facility improvements, including the installation of a Solar PV system and extensive interior and exterior renovations. The third phase is focused on improving energy-efficiency and protecting the health and safety of facility users. Completion of construction is expected by August 2017.

The J. Walter Cameron Center houses 14 non-profit agencies that serve a total of 60,000 Maui County residents–of which 30,000 are considered low-income. The Center is a critical component of the infrastructure supporting Maui’s health and social service providers by providing low-cost office and program space.
