No Tsunami Threat to Hawai‘i After Large Quake in Philippines

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi after a 6.8 (7.2 preliminary magnitude) earthquake reported at 10:23 a.m. HST on Friday, April 28, 2017 in Mindanao, Philippines, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The PTWC states that based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-Wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi.

According to the USGS, the quake was located:

  • 16.6 mi WSW of Balangonan, Philippines (Population: 2,329)
  • 22.6 mi SSW of Glan, Philippines (Population: 24,256)
  • 33.9 mi SSW of Malapatan, Philippines (Population: 19,439)
  • 38.3 mi SSW of Lun Pequeño, Philippines (Population: 11,541)
  • 71.1 mi SSE of Koronadal, Philippines (Population: 125,502)
