Kahului Man Suffers Life-Threatening Injuries in Haleakalā Hwy Street Bike Crash

A 32-year-old Kahului man suffered life-threatening injuries when he was ejected from his street bike during a crash on the Haleakalā Highway in Makawao on Monday afternoon, June 26, 2017.

The accident was reported at 1:03 p.m. on the highway at the Makawao Avenue intersection.

Police say the collision occurred as a black 2004 Yamaha street bike was traveling east on Haleakalā Highway when it ran a red light at the intersection and was broad-sided by a gray 2002 Mini Cooper two-door sedan traveling north on Makawao Avenue.

Police say the operator of the street bike was ejected and collided with a silver 2015 Mazda multi-purpose vehicle traveling west on Haleakalā Highway.

The operator of the street bike was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room with life-threatening injuries and remained hospitalized in critical condition at last report.

The operator of the Mini Cooper, a 72-year-old man from Makawao, was not injured. The operator of the Mazda, a 46-year-old visitor from Florida and her two passengers were also uninjured.

The roadway was closed for about four hours as police conducted an investigation into the collision.

A preliminary investigation reveals that the operator of the street bike was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. Police say the operator of the Mini Cooper and the occupants of the Mazda were all wearing their seatbelts.

The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol in the collision has not been determined as the investigation is on-going.
