Free Summer Classes Offered to Maui Youth at UHMC

Intermediate and High School students are encouraged to sign up for free career-focused summer classes taking place this month at University of Hawai‘i Maui College.

Called “College and Career Days,” the program includes free transportation, lunch and snacks. Students may sign up for as many classes as they want.

“This TRIO Talent Search program helps students explore career paths and build confidence so they have a headstart in life,” said Chancellor Dr. Lui Hokoana. “We want Maui’s young people to know that they can go to college and succeed.”

All classes are offered to students who have completed grades 6-8. Select classes are are offered to students who have completed grades 9-12 and include courses on aquaponics, construction, cpr and first aid, photography, farm apprentice, communications, GPS, native Hawaiian culture, climate change, culinary arts, and video game design.  Details are posted below:

ALL ABOUT AQUAPONICS – Friday, July 7, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Aquaponics is a kind of sustainable farming where aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (the soil-less growing of plants) are combined in one integrated system. Learn about small scale aquaponics systems and tour the college greenhouse.

CONSTRUCTION & THE TRADES – Monday, July 10, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Curious about what it takes to become a carpenter or electrician? Learn about different trade jobs in the vocational tech shop, and tour a construction zone on campus.

CPR & FIRST AID – Tuesday, July 11-12, 9am-2pm

This class is also offered to students who have completed grades 9-12.

Learn the basics of First Aid and how to respond to emergency situations involving life-threatening scenarios. Participants in this class earn invaluable training applicable to any future career path.

PHOTOGRAPHY FOR FUN & PROFIT – Tuesday, July 11, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

This class is also offered to students who have completed grades 9-12, scheduled for July 13.
Learn about photography equipment, software editing programs and how to take quality, memorable photos. This class inspires careers in the field of photography, media and design.

YOUTH FARM APPRENTICE – Thursday, July 13, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Learn hands-on from a local Maui farmer about best practices and sustainable operations toward the future of farming. Explore solutions on healthy soil management, nature of crops and farm-to-table practices to feed our growing community.

WAYS WITH WORDS: COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR COLLEGE, CAREER, LIFE – Monday, July 17, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Using poetry as a starting point for personal expression, students will gain effective communication skills that will benefit them in college and in their careers. Explore art from the Honolulu Museum of Art, film, and the music of Oceania through poetry and creative writing.

INTRO TO GPS & FIELDWORK DAY – Wednesday, July 19, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Learn the basics of Global Positioning System (GPS) and real-world applications for natural resource management, agriculture and earth sciences. Practice using GPS in the field at Waihee Refuge.

NATIVE HAWAIIAN CULTURE – Friday, July 21, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Get immersed in stories about Hawaiian Culture and its Moku system, with an introduction to its language, art, cultural practices and people. Learn about its rich history and traditional values, which has shaped the community today.

RISING TIDES: UNDERSTANDING CLIMATE CHANGE – Monday & Tuesday, July 24-25, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Understand how climate change is impacting our environment, and its local effects in Hawaii. This class includes a visit at the Maui Ocean Center with a preview of STEM careers in conservation.

CULINARY ARTS – Wednesday & Thursday, July 26-27, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

This class is also offered to students who have completed grades 9-12.
Learn what it takes to be a chef and turn select ingredients into a masterpiece. Participants in this class will receive an overview, and practical application of the skills needed in this exciting industry. Under the guidance of a Chef instructor, students will cook and take home samples and recipes, in addition to the fun experience. Students are advised to wear closed-toe shoes.

VIDEO GAME DESIGN & CULTURAL STORYTELLING FOR BEGINNERS – Friday, July 28, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

This class is also offered to students who have completed grades 9-12.
Join the Creative Producers behind Twiddle Productions as they dive into stories and themed game design. This exciting multi level class will focus on the stories of Māui the Demi God and the variations of those stories. Find out what it takes to design and produce a video game.

Some classes may require protection from outdoor elements such as sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, extra set of clothes and closed-toe shoes.

The TRIO Talent Search program provides career exploration services, as well as academic advising, college tours, financial support and help in all steps of the college admissions process. The program also identifies and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education.
