Maui Unemployment Rate at 3.2% in June

Maui County’s 3.4% unemployment rate for June was slightly higher from last month’s 3% rate and down from the 3.7% rate reported at the same time last year. The new data was released this week by the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.

Unemployment rates in Maui County increased on Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi from month before levels.

Lānaʻi’s rate of 6.1% was up from the 3.4% rate recorded a month before, and down from the 7.1% rate recorded at the same time last year.

Molokaʻi continued to have the state’s highest unemployment rate of 10.4%–up drastically from the 6.7% rate in May, and slightly down from the 10.7% rate recorded at the same time last year.

The Island of Maui in Maui County recorded a 3.2% unemployment rate in June 2017, up from the 2.9% rate recorded in May, and slightly lower than the 3.4% rate reported last year.

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Labor & Industrial Relations announced that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for June was 2.7% for the fourth successive month.

“Hawaiʻi’s economy continues to hold steady at a low 2.7% unemployment rate for a fourth consecutive month,” said Linda Chu Takayama, director of the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. Nationally, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.4% in June, compared to 4.3% in May.

The department reports industry employment gains in several areas including the following job expansions: Professional & Business Services (+1,000), Leisure & Hospitality (+900), Financial Activities (+400), and Other Services (+400).

Employment remained unchanged in the Trade, Transportation & Utilities grouping, as well as in the Manufacturing and Information sectors.

Job losses were experienced in Educational & Health Services (-100) and Construction (-500).

In comparison with June 2016, total non-farm jobs have expanded by 9,800.

According to the new data, there were 676,500 employed and 19,100 unemployed individuals in the state in June, which combines for a total seasonally adjusted labor force of 695,600.
