UPDATE: WAILUKU MOUNTAIN RESCUE: The 60-year-old man from Wailuku was not injured. He had set out from his Main Street home for a hike to the cross at around 7 a.m. Tuesday morning and became lost far above the cross at the 3,200 ft elevation. A hiker was airlifted to safety at around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017 after becoming lost in the hills above Wailuku Heights.

Initial reports indicate the male hiker was headed towards the “White Cross” on the hill at the entrance to ʻĪao Valley.

A landing zone was set up at South Alu Park for transport of the hiker to safety.
