Lifeguards on Patrol After Shark Sighting at Ho‘okipa

Lifeguards at Hoʻokipa Beach along Maui’s North Shore were patrolling the area on Wednesday afternoon following a shark sighting reported near shore.

The sighting was reported at around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017, in shallow water.

Witnesses described the creature as around 5 feet in length and say it appeared to be a black tip.

Witnesses say video of the sighting shows the shark biting an eel near the water’s surface.

The beach remained open at last report.

Maui Now sat down with the Roberson brothers who witnessed the incident.
