Surfrider Foundation Maui Announces Upcoming Events

The Surfrider Foundation Maui Chapter announced its upcoming events for Fall. The foundation helps make sure beaches are accessible and clean, and also helps preserve Maui coasts by preventing plastic from polluting the water.

In honor of International Coastal Cleanup Day, Surfrider Maui will support two beach cleanups in Lahaina and Haʻikū. from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017.

The group will support the Lahaina Town Cleanup with check-in stations at Mala Ramp and Kamehameha Iki Park and will work with Mālama Maui Nui in Haʻikū to cleanup Peʻahi. There will be a dumpster drop available at Hahana Rd and Hāna Highway, just past Valley Isle Memorial Park.

Lunch will be donated by local restaurants. Some food will be provided but bring extra snacks in case.

Clean-up gear will be provided. Participants are asked to bring sun/outdoor gear and water.

On Sunday, Sept. 17, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., award-winning writer, surfer and teacher Jaimal Yogis (author of “Saltwater Buddha” and “The Fear Project”) will lead a brief, ocean-inspired meditation, and speak about his new memoir “All Our Waves Are Water.” BBC named his new memoir a “Best Beach Read of 2017.” There will also be a Q&A and book signing. The event will take place at Lumeria in Pāʻia. All book sales will befit the Surfrider Foundation’s Maui Chapter.

On Oct. 14, 2017, the Surfrider Foundation Maui will host its second annual Paʻina, a celebration of Maui ocean guardians, at Sheraton Maui Resort and Spa. The event will honor five recipients (one business and four individuals) who have made a positive impact on Maui’s environment including Les Potts, Kai Lenny, Victor Lopez, John Severson and Flatbread Pizza Co. The event will take place from 5 to 9:30 p.m. and will feature a meet and greet, pupus, drinks, a DJ, and auction. Tickets are available here.

On Wednesday, Aug. 2, Surfrider Maui launched its monthly water quality testing campaign for 18 different beaches spanning from the North Shore to Waiehu. This is the foundation’s fourth test, and they say they will continue to test every month to generate a clear picture of the water quality on the most swell-lashed coastline on Maui.
