Kīhei Condo Fire Results in $200,000 Damage

A 41-year-old Kīhei man managed to escape from a condo fire on his own and was treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire was reported at 4:44 a.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2018 in a 4th floor unit of the Maui Parkshore Condominium located at 2653 South Kīhei Road.

Firefighters arrived at 4:48 a.m. to find heavy black smoke coming from the unit. Crews brought the fire under control at 5:05 a.m. and had it fully extinguished at 5:32 a.m.

According to department reports, the man was the lone occupant of the unit at the time and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment.

Maui Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro said fire investigators did not find any evidence that the fire was intentionally set and the cause of the fire has been classified as undetermined.

Damage to the 900 square foot apartment was set at $175,000 to the structure and $25,000 to its contents. FSO Yatsushiro said the majority of the fire loss occurred in the bedroom area, with the rest of the unit affected by significant smoke damage.  An adjacent unit also sustained minor damage to glass windows from the heat of the fire.

The Red Cross is reportedly assisting the man with his future needs.

A battalion chief and four companies from Wailea, Kīhei, and Kahului responded to the blaze.
