Maui Man Airlifted From Steep Rock Face at Makamaka‘ole

Fire crews airlifted a hiker who scaled down a steep rock face at Makamakaʻole Gulch, but was unable to make it back up.

The 44 year-old Kīhei man was hiking with friends on the makai (ocean) side of the Kahekili Highway when the incident was reported at 5:53 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 13, 2018.

A friend who was with him decided to call 9-1-1 as they were losing daylight.

Rescue crews used a  “short-haul” system to air lift the man to safety.

The individual was reported in good condition and did not require medical attention.

The department’s Air 1 helicopter, Engine 1 crew out of Wailuku and Rescue 10 Crew our of Kahului assisted in the rescue.
