The Maui Arts and Cultural Center will host award-winning author and photographer Susan Middleton for a presentation of portraits from two of her acclaimed books on Friday, Aug. 24 as part of the Merwin Conservancy’s Green Room literary and environmental salon.

Middleton will first present portraits from her book Spineless, a look into the wondrous realm of marine invertebrates, “the little things that run the world” as E.O. Wilson puts it in his foreword to her book.

Next, Middleton will present portraits from her second book Remains of a Rainbow, a journey into the world of rare Hawaiian flora and fauna, highlighting William Merwin’s eloquent foreword to the book.

This visual storytelling presentation will be followed by an on-stage conversation between Middleton and two of Hawai’i’s most celebrated botanists and endangered species protection experts, Steve Perlman and Hank Oppenheimer, who were instrumental as Middleton’s guides during the making of Remains of a Rainbow.

Book signing with live entertainment and refreshments will follow.

The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 at the MACC.
