Maui County Update: 215 People Seek Shelter

Hurricane Lane continues its trek towards the island today. Here is the latest in storm related news from Maui County:

State Department of Transportation reported several trees down on Hāna Highway this morning but has since cleared these locations. Residents and tourists are advised not to travel Hāna Highway while the storm is heading our way for safety reasons.

Flooding in Hāna has closed down Wainʻāpanapa, ʻUlaino and Waikoloa roads. Other than that all county roads are still accessible. However, motorists are advised to limit travel at this time, especially to remote areas such as Hāna, where people can get stuck behind rockslides and fallen trees that come down in the storm.

East Molokaʻi residents are urged to seek shelter now before flooding prevents them from traveling to the evacuation shelter at Molokaʻi High School. There were 215 people in evacuation shelters county wide as of last night’s count by the Maui Police Department.

– Lahaina Intermediate – 24
– King Kekaulike High School – 33
– Molokai High School – 13
– Maui High School – 80
– Lokelani Intermediate – 61
– Lānaʻi High – 2

Maui High and Lokelani are designated as “pet-friendly” shelters. Please remember to bring your own bedding, snacks and other items to make yourself comfortable at the shelter.

Please note that these are the only official shelters in Maui County. Kalama Intermediate School is NOT and never has been a designated shelter.

Non-profit agencies report that 10 homeless families are now being sheltered from the storm.
