Contemporary Origami Exhibit Comes to MACC
Above the Fold demonstrates the extraordinary artistic achievements being made in the world of contemporary origami. In the hands of nine international artists, what was once considered a children’s craft becomes a sophisticated and often breathtaking global art form.
Paper is transformed into dramatic sculpture, large-scale installations and conceptual works that express contemporary social, political, aesthetic and cultural dialogues. Above the Fold is the first traveling exhibition to bring a group of origami installations and conceptual sculptures from around the world to North American audiences.
Visionary master folders including Erik Demaine and Martin Demaine (Canada/USA), Vincent Floderer(France), Miri Golan (Israel), Paul Jackson (UK/Israel), Dr. Robert J. Lang (USA), Yuko Nishimura (Japan),Richard Sweeney (UK), and Jiangmei Wu (China/USA) push the boundaries of paper as a medium to create bold, provocative works.
Origami, literally meaning “paper folding,” has evolved from a Japanese craft into a highly expressive, global art form that intersects and impacts the realms of art and science. Today, artists from all over the world are folding paper into increasingly elaborate and provocative sculptural works, while scientists and mathematicians are using origami to unlock the mysteries of the universe. Since even our DNA is folded, origami artist PaulJackson has expressed, “You and I are born from folding.” We are all, in essence, works of origami.

Two Workshops with Dr. Robert J. Lang (USA) origami artist, author, and lecturer:
Sept. 1, 2018, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. -“Introduction to Modular Origami Polyhedra” This workshop will introduce participants to modular origami, folding polyhedra to learn a little bit of 3D geometry, and make some cool shapes to play with. Cost $60.00 materials included.
Sept. 1, 1:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. – Bringing Origami to Life: Artistic Folding Techniques, This workshop will explore wet-folding techniques that were developed in the latter part of the 20th century that added life and natural form to origami. Cost $60.00 materials included.

Oct. 6, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., FREE Event
Families are invited to view the exhibit together, and discover the art and mathematics of origami, and fun of paper folding with hands on activities. Note: pre-registration is not needed for the Oct. 6th event.

Above the Fold is curated by Meher McArthur and tour organized by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC. Meher McArthur is an independent Asian art curator, author and educator. She was a curator for many years at Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena, CA and now curates and consults for several southern California museums and galleries. She has published several books on Asian art and culture and writes regularly about contemporary Asian and Asian American artists for the website KCET Artbound as well as Fabrik and Artillery magazines.
