No Threat to Hawai‘i After 6+ Quake in Mariana Islands

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi after a preliminary magnitude earthquake of 6.6 in the Mariana Islands Region, reported at 12:35 p.m. HST on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2018, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The PTWC says that based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-Wide tsunami is not expected and there is not threat to Hawaiʻi.

According to preliminary data compiled by the USGS, the quake occurred at a depth of 53 km and was located: 141.2 miles NE of Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands; 159.9 miles NE of San Jose Village, Northern Mariana Islands; 268.6 miles NNE of Yigo Village, Guam; 271.5 miles NE of Dededo Village, Guam; and 275.4 miles NE of Tamuning-Tumon-Harmon Village, Guam.
