Local-Food Keiki Video Cooking Contest
The University of Hawai‘i Cooperative Extension Service is launching a campaign to promote local growers in the community and encourage healthy eating by holding a Keiki GET Local Video Cooking Competition.
GET local stands for “Grow, Eat, Think Local.” All students who are 12-18 years old are invited to submit a cooking video that highlights their cooking abilities, uses a local ingredient for their recipe and includes information on the local farmer.
Some of the prizes for winners include: the chance to cook alongside local celebrity chef at the Millhouse for a Maui Chef’s Table event, gift cards for technology equipment, two winners from Lānaʻi and Molokaʻi will win a free trip to Maui to visit the Millhouse and one winner will have their menu item featured at the top restaurant for one week.
The extended deadline for submission is Nov. 16, 2018.
“It is important to support farm to table because eating local organic food is healthy, supportive of local farmers, as well as good for the environment,” stated contest participant Starshine Eareheart age 14, “I want to help make people healthy and happy.”
The GET Local initiative provides opportunities for residents to learn more about the origin of local crops and food products, the science and research behind food choices, and information on access to products and uses.
Contest participants are asked to create a 5-7 minute cooking video and submit by Nov. 16, 2018.
Submissions can be uploaded to youtube, to find out more and to fill out an application, visit the GET Local website: http://go.hawaii.edu/fBZ or, email [email protected]
