Attempted Kidnapping Near Maui Waena

The Maui Police Department is warning the public about an alleged attempted kidnapping that occurred near Maui Waena Intermediate School in Kahului.

The incident allegedly occurred on Tuesday Dec. 11 between 3:45 and 4 p.m.

Police say an 11-year-old female student was walking home from school on Ekolu Street, when she was approached by a man operating a tan colored four-door sedan.

According to police reports, the man pulled his vehicle next to the female near the intersection with Kaulu Place and opened the front passenger door and asked if the girl needed a ride. When the girl refused, police say the male reached over and attempted to pull her into the vehicle. The girl resisted and was able to get away unharmed.

Police say the man then made a u-turn on Ekolu Street and fled towards Onehee Avenue. The man was described as having a dark and bumpy facial complexion, black and white colored hair (more white on the sides), brown eyes and a mustache. He looked to be about 50-60 years old, was 5’6”-5’8” tall, and weighed 160-180 pounds with a skinny build and a tribal tattoo on the top of one of his hands. The man also had a vertical scar on his upper right cheek area and diamond stud earrings in both ears. Police say he was last seen wearing a black long sleeve shirt, black jeans and black rubber slippers.

The vehicle was described as a tan, possibly 1990’s model Honda Civic that was lowered with a shattered rear windshield. The rear windows were tinted but the front windows were not tinted. The front passenger door was observed to have a dent in it. No license plate was given.
