The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement for the County of Maui in effect through this weekend.

NWS forecasters say a powerful low pressure system is expected to develop and move toward islands from the north over the weekend. The low will send a large amount of wave energy towards Hawaiʻi that will impact exposed north and west facing shores. The public is advised to expect dangerous seas and surf late Friday through Sunday night.

While the details and exact timing remain uncertain, the NWS says the low will bring the potential for strong and potentially damaging north to northwest winds Friday through the weekend. These winds would be strongest over ridges and mountaintops and where they accelerate downslope.

Individuals with outdoor plans for the weekend are asked to be prepared for very windy conditions. The agency recommends that those with marine activities planned, may want to consider postponing them.
